If you enjoyed the video of Norway’s Katzenjammer, here’s the free download of their first single. . . all those instruments. . . gotta love it! I don’t know what makes it sound like horses galloping, but I like it. A lot.

Because it’s my berfday today. . . May 28th (in case you want to mark down in your calendars), I’ve decided to post a couple of birthday inspired songs for this week’s Song of the Week. Some are just plain ol’ favorites, some have a tiny bit to do with the word birthday, some are just good music, no reason but that. Whatever the case, it’s a happy day around here and you better be happy too! Weird songs or not!
This Time I Know Its For Real – Donna Summer (love the whistles and hand claps!)
All Will Be Well – Gabe Dixon Band

The first single off St Vincent’s sophomore release Actor is titled funny enough, “Actor Out of Work”. It’s a labyrinth of unorthodox pop, driving rock and lovely swells of energy and ooh ooh oohs. It’s short and sweet, and full of funky, artistic bite.

There’s a ton, and I mean a TON, of impressive new music out there, but some days my ears just need a lil’ something familiar. It’s like a putting on an old pair of ratty, faded jeans – it just feels comfy. Not that this week’s song is faded and ratty. But you get my drift. It’s a favorite track of mine from Alana Davis’ 1997 debut Blame It On Me. . .

To piggy back off my thank you post, here’s the song “Thank You” for your listening and downloading pleasure. It’s a great little diddy and I really do feel as grateful to you as the song suggests. THANKS for taking time out of your day to visit!!

Québec’s Béatrice Martin is the amazing sound architect behind the musings of Coeur de Pirate and she’s just eighteen. Her captivating voice creates beautiful music even if the lyrics are foreign to your ears.

Mat Kearney’s third album City of Black & White is due out May 19, and based on his recent single “Closer to Love” fans can look forward to an upbeat, blissful kinda album. ”Closer to Love” is also quite reminiscent of Coldplay’s Chris Martin’s gentle, driving style. . .

Alessi’s Ark debut album Notes from the Treehouse drops May 4th and it’s full of enchanting sounds from the classic harpsichord in “Constellations” to bluesy Motown backbeats in “Memory Box”. Alessi’s poetry and quirky approach to music is memorable and enviable.

The sound of Oregon indie band Blind Pilot is old-timey yet current; a very appealing combination thanks to the guitar, banjo and violin. And this endearing music troupe has a debut album that’s easy on the ears from beginning to end.

Andrew Bird’s latest album Noble Beast is an enchanting and intelligent collection of songs that will inspire you, whether you like it or not. The upbeat, whistle infused sound of “Fitz & Dizzyspells” is especially engaging.
